How to use
It is important to know how you can use a flirt pole effectively and in a fun way with your dog. A flirt pole is a great way to play together, it gives dogs the opportunity to use their instincts in a safe way, and it great for training impulse control. Here are some steps that might lead you in the right way!
-
Safety First: Ensure that the flirt pole is in good condition with no loose parts that could pose a choking hazard. Also supervise your dog during play to prevent any accidents or injuries.
-
Start Slowly: Introduce the flirt pole gradually to your dog, especially if they're new to the toy. Let them investigate it and become comfortable with it before starting play.
-
Choose a Suitable Location: Find a spacious area, preferably outdoors, where your dog has plenty of room to run and chase the lure without obstacles.
-
Engage Your Dog's Interest: To play wiggle or move the flirt pole in a way that mimics the movement of prey, such as small animals or birds. This will capture your dog's attention and trigger their natural chasing instinct.
-
Play time: Move the flirt pole around in different directions, varying the speed to keep your dog engaged and challenged. This helps to stimulate their mind and body. Do make sure that the dog has plenty of possibilities to catch the lure. It can cause an incredible amount of frustration for a dog when the toy is out of reach all the time. The flirt pole is absolutely no tug toy, so remember to play catch and release.
-
Training: Slowly incorporate obedience commands like "sit," "stay," "come," or "drop it" while playing with the flirt pole. The flirt pole offers a safe and staged scene to learn your dog to control his instincts. These new skills can be very useful to prepare for daily life situations, for example when you encounter wildlife in the forest. Using commands during playtime with the flirtpole encourages dogs to listen to you even in the midst of excitement. Do make sure to slowly start with easy commands, prevent frustration and always reward.
-
Reward and Praise: Whenever your dog successfully catches or interacts with the lure on the flirt pole, reward them with praise, treats, or their favorite toy. Positive reinforcement strengthens the bond between you and your dog and encourages them to continue playing.
-
End on a Positive Note: When playtime is over, allow your dog to "win" by catching the lure one last time. A great way to calmly remove the flirpole while preventing guarding issues over the lure is to trade it for something else. For example you can throw a cookie somewhere on the ground for your dog to find, this way your dog's attention will switch to the cookie which allows you to safely put away the flirpole. This helps to prevent frustration and ensures that they associate the experience with fun and enjoyment.
-
Monitor Playtime: Avoid overexerting your dog during play and be mindful of signs of fatigue or overheating. Take breaks as needed and provide plenty of water to keep them hydrated.
-
Store Safely: When not in use, store the flirt pole out of reach of your dog to prevent them from chewing on it or playing with it unsupervised.
By following these guidelines, you can effectively use a flirt pole to provide your dog with mental stimulation, physical exercise, and bonding opportunities.
